Sew Teach Me 1
Student Projects
Get to Know Your Sewing Machine
Using the manual, the student learns how the machine works, how to wind the bobbin, thread the machine, use the hand wheel, pedal, reverse and a variety of stitches. At the end of the session, with an embroidered name tag, each student chooses a felt backing and ribbon to create a personalized name tag to wear during the Sew Teach Me™ sessions.
Make a Pillowcase
Making a pillowcase is the first real sewing project students make. They choose from a variety of kits donated by our local sewing community. With this project they learn to sew straight lines using different seam allowances and learn a technique known as the “burrito” or “hot dog” roll. Students leave with their own pillowcase.
Make a Sewing Tool Caddy
Each student will make a sewing or tool caddy from a variety of premade kits. They will learn about fusing an interfacing to the fabric, rounding corners, and topstitching. They can decide what they want to use the caddy for, and custom sew the pockets for their own use.
Make a Pillow Pal
The Pillow Pal is the student’s first chance to use a pattern designed by Sew Teach Me. They’ll learn about tracing a pattern onto fabric, then cutting and stitching around curves. Students will draw and stitch a face, stuff the body, arms, and legs to give it dimension. They will learn hand sewing techniques to close the body.
Sew Teach Me 2
Sew Teach Me 2 is our continuing education for students that have completed all of Sew Teach Me™1 and want to continue developing their sewing skills. Four additional projects will be taught.
There is a $5 fee for each of these projects.
Drawstring Backpack
This fun and useful project teaches students how to make a lined bag, stitch angled seams, and create a pocket from a piece of scrap fabric. They also make a casing to insert cords that draw together and how to measure to make the backpack just the right length for them.
Zipper Pouch
Students learn to make a front zipper pouch that is lined and has no exposed seams. They also gain the skills to make a zipper pouch any size they want. These make wonderful gifts for family and friends.
Notepad Cover
Need a colorful & fun place to take notes in class or just jot down a reminder to yourself? This Velcro closing cover has a place for pens & pencils and a 5” x 7” notepad inside. Students use batting for padding, learn how to use and attach hook and loop tape (Velcro) on a closing tab, pocket placement, and more.
Tote Bag
You can never have too many tote bags! These can be used for carrying books, going shopping, overnighters at a friend’s house, and so much more. They are fully lined, and students design a pocket for the inside. Contrasting fabrics with many opportunities for topstitching practice give them a fun and personalized look.
